New Additions to 1800 Personal Property Tax Lists!
Amelia County Now Available!
As John Frederick Dorman, Editor of The Virginia Genealogist, notes below, the 1800 U.S. Population Census does not exist for Virginia (with the exception of Accomac and Louisa Counties). However, the 1800 Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists exist for nearly every county and city that were a part of Virginia in 1800 and are the most useful substitute for the non-existent Virginia 1800 U.S. Population Census. In volume 3 (1959) of The Virginia Genealogist, Mr. Dorman, began the publication of the existing 1800 Personal Property Tax lists for Virginia with Albemarle County. He continued publishing these lists through volume 50, the last volume for this publication, and ended with Princess Anne County. VGS picked up where The Virginia Genealogist left off and published the remaining lists in its quarterly, The Magazine of Virginia Genealogy.
Volunteers with VGS have begun transferring these lists to a spreadsheet and preparing them for publication in the Members Only section of the VGS website. The tax lists for Albemarle County, Amelia County and Alexandria are now available to VGS members.
Stay tuned for more to be added in the near future!
We thank all those volunteers who are working to make these lists available to us!
