"A METHOD TO OUR MADNESS -- METHODOLOGY: The Foundation of Good Genealogy"


          The Spring Conference of the Virginia Genealogical Society (VGS) will be held at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, April 17, 2004. The Library is located at 800 East Broad Street. The conference features three lectures on methodology certain to improve the skills of genealogists at all levels. In the afternoon, attendees have the opportunity to "practice what was prached" with hands-on sessions.


          SPEAKERS:

          Dorothy A. Boyd-Rush, Ph.D., research historian at James Madison University and a professional genealogist for over 10 years, specializing in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and its German inhabitants; author of numerous articles and several books on Virginia records; and a regular contributor to Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, and Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter.

          Marty Hiatt, CGRS a full-time genealogist, researching the families of Northern Virginia since 1990. She edits and publishes Northern Virginia Genealogy, is chairman of the Virginia Institute of Genealogical Research, and for fun likes to abstract court records or hunt in cemeteries.

          Barbara Vines Little, CG, a professional genealogist since 1982, specializing in Virginia record sources, tax records, land platting, neighborhood reconstruction, complete genealogies and problem-solving; editor of Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, and Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter.

          11:30-12:45 p.m. -- Lunch
          12:45-1:15 p.m. -- VGS Meeting. Broadbent
          1:15-2:15 p.m. -- Documentation for Everyday. Little
          2:15-2:45 p.m. -- Break

            Hands-On Sessions:
          2:45-3:15 p.m. -- Tricky Transcription. Boyd-Rush

            Documenting Non-Traditional Sources. Little
          3:15-3:30 p.m. -- Break
          3:30-4:00 p.m. -- Repeat of sessions offered at 2:45 p.m.


          ACCOMMODATIONS:

          There are several hotels near the Library of Virginia: The Richmond Marriott (804) 643-3400, and the Richmond Omni (804) 344-7000. Both have weekend rates.

          There are several parking lots near the Library. Parking in the Library lot is reserved for library patrons and is not permitted for conference attendees.


          OTHER:

          Vendors of books, software, forms, and other items of interest to researchers will be available all day. Be sure to visit them at breaks.

            Registration begins at 8:15 in the hallway outside the Lecture Hall at the Library.

            To pre-register by April 5, 2004, send a personal check or money order for $35.00 ($40 non-VGS member) per registrant, payable to the Virginia Genealogical Society, to our address given above.

            Please note if a vegetarian meal is requested. Pre-registration by April 5, 2004, includes lunch. Meal reservations received after this date cannot be guaranteed.

            After April 5, 2004, registration is $40.00 ($45 non-VGS member).

            Cancellations received after April 5, 2004, will not be refunded.
