Death Notices from Richmond, Virginia Newspapers, 1821-1840. There was no
provision to keep records of death prior to 1853. However, clues may be gleaned from
isolated church papers, family Bibles, or newspapers. Death notices in the Richmond
area newspapers were not limited to the immediate vicinity but are a statewide

Marriage Notices from Richmond, Virginia Newspapers, 1821-1840. Although
marriages were kept as a public record in Virginia prior to 1853, parents were not listed
unless the bride or groom was under age. These notices provide additional details for
marriges recorded elsewhere. In some cases they provide the only record of

brings this valuable reference series to 1853 when registration of vital records began in
Virginia. Notices are not limited to Richmond, but announce marriages that occurred

Index to Hayden's Virginia Genealogies. Horace Edwin Hayden's Virginia
Genealogies..., in over 700 pages presents information on the Glassell, Ball, Brown, Bryan,
Conway, Daniel, Ewell, Holladay, Lewis, Littlepage, Moncure, Peyton, Robinson, Scott,
Taylor, and Wallace families, and touches on many others. Several editions have been
printed over the years, with different indexes. This complete full-name index was
compiled by Rena Gray Fazel and in cooperation with the Virginia Historical Society.
