For Virginia Researchers

Because of the close proximity of the Library of Virginia and Virginia Historical Society, VGS does not maintain a library, research facility, or surname material and does not employ research staff. The link below is a list in PDF format of Virginia-based researchers. Hard copy is available upon receipt of a SASE business envelope.

West Virginia Estates

Virginia Genealogical Society's Newest Publication: Index to West Virginia Estates before 1866 Volume 1, now available in the Store

NEW! Wesley E. Pippenger, Index to West Virginia Estates Before 1866, Volume 1: Counties of Barbour, Berkeley, Doddridge, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Harrison, Jefferson, Lewis, Marion, Mineral, Monongalia, Morgan, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Preston, Randolph, Taylor, Tucker, Tyler, Upshur, and Wetzel.

VGS is happy to announce our latest publication by Mr. Wesley Pippenger, Index to West Virginia Estates before 1866 Volume 1. This volume covers the northern counties, exclusive of those in the northern panhandle, and is the first of a 2-volume set. While bound will books are the primary source like all of Mr. Pippenger’s works, this volume goes far beyond the information found in the will books., Mr.Pippenger also indexes administration and guardian records as well as estate sales and inventories. For these records, he searched 87 volumes of estate records in addition to the will books.

This book is a must for the thorough West Virginia/Virginia researcher. The records indexed will aid the researcher in finding those who failed to leave a will as well as all of the records pertaining to an estate for those who left a will. This volume is a rich resource and a necessary adjunct to the unindexed online images available through FamilySearch saving the researcher time and providing a more complete picture of an ancestor.
