BEYOND "GONE WITH THE WIND"--
RESEARCHING CIVIL WAR ANCESTORS


          The Fall Conference of the Virginia Genealogical Society (VGS) will be held at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, on Saturday, September 30, 2000. A reception followed by a roundtable discussion will be held Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., September 29th, at the Lee Jackson Motel, Winchester.


          SPEAKERS:

          Dorothy A. Boyd-Rush, PhD., is VGS president, dean of the graduate school at James Madison University where she is also professor of history. She is a book review editor for the Society's Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, and editor for Association of Professional Genealogists.

          Dale Harter, is assistant editor of Virginia Cavalcade published by the Library of Virginia. He served as director of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society's Warren-Sipe Museum in Harrisonburg from 1989-1992. Mr. Harter has done extensive research on the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley, with emphasis on the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area.

          Babs Melton, is director of Wayside Museums, Wayside Foundation of American History and Arts, a board member of the Shenandoah University Civil War Institute, a Civil War living historian, and an active member of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Virginia.

          Marie Martin Murphy, CGRS, is a professional genealogist and lecturer. She is vice-president of VGS, and president of the Central Virginia Genealogical Society.

          Clyde Ratcliffe, is a former treasurer for the Society and is a Richmond-based genealogist.

          Craig Roberts Scott, CGRS, is a nationally-known authority on military records and is the proprietor of Willow Bend Books and Family Line Publications (our vendor for this conference).

          10:45-12:15 p.m. -- Reading What You Find: Deciphering Early Handwriting: Boyd-Rush

          1:15 p.m. -- Lunch on your own at the Shenandoah University Cafeteria

          1:15-1:30 p.m. -- VGS Business Meeting: Open to all

          1:45-3:15 p.m. -- Civil War Resources at the Library of Virginia: Harter

          3:15-3:30 p.m. -- Celebrate the 40th birthday of VGS with cake!

          3:30-4:00 p.m. -- Using Research to Present Living History: Melton


          ACCOMMODATIONS:

          A block of rooms has been reserved until September 8th at the Best Western Lee Jackson Motel in Winchester. Rooms are $58/double, $53/single, a 10% discount for AAA and AARP members. Call motel directly for reservations, at 540-662-4154 or 1-800-528-1234.

          DIRECTIONS TO SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY:

          From Route 81 North, take Exit 313. From Route 81 South, take Exit 313B. Turn West on Route 50 and follow signs to Shenandoah University. At the university entrance, turn right, drive up the hill, and Henkel Hall is on the left. Parking is open.


          OTHER:

          A vendor of books, software, forms, and other items of interest to researchers will be available all day. Be sure to visit at breaks.

            REGISTRATION DETAILS:

            To register by September 5th, 2000, send a personal check or money order for $20.00 ($25 non-VGS member) per registrant, payable to the Virginia Genealogical Society, to our address given above.

            After September 5th, 2000, registration is $25.00 ($30 non-VGS member).

            Cancellations received after September 20th, 2000, will not be refunded.

            Registration does NOT include lunch, which can be obtained for about $5.00 at the university cafeteria. If you would like a confirmation of your registration, please provide an email address or SASE.
