"TREASURING VIRGINIA RECORDS: Preservation and Access"


          We are pleased to announce the upcoming 2-day VGS Fall conference to be held October 17 and 18, 1997, at the new Library of Virginia, 800 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219-1905.

          This first VGS conference to be held at the Library will provide an opportunity for attendees to explore the layout and some of the offerings of the new facility.

          Day one will focus on preservation and access, and feature speakers:

          • Conley L. Edwards III, State Archivist. "Welcome to LVA: What's New?"
          • David A. Bell, Arlington County Circuit Court Clerk. "Circuit Clerk's Experience With Genealogists"
          • Marianne McKee, Map Specialist/Archivist, Library of Virginia. "The Road to Access Through Preservation: A Cartographic Example"
          • Lyndon H. Hart III, Archivist, Library of Virginia. "Court Records at the Library of Virginia"

          Day two will explore research methodology, and feature speakers:

          • Eric G. Grundset, Librarian, D.A.R. "How Old Did They Have to Be: Legal Ages in Genealogical Research"
          • Dr. James D. Munson, Historian. "Charles Broadwater Himself (1719-1806): Intuiting the 3-D Person From 2-D Data"
          • Barbara Vines Little, VGS Vice-President. "Travelogues and Diaries"
          • John T. Kneebone, Director, Publications and Educational Services, Library of Virginia. "The Virginia Colonial Records Project: Access to Indispensable Sources"

          A Friday evening presentation will be given at 6:00 p.m. on "The Washington Papers," by Dr. Jack Warren. This will be in conjunction with an annual meeting of the Friends of the Virginia State Archives.

          A group of rooms is being held at a conference rate at the adjacent Marriott Hotel on Broad Street, downtown Richmond. The rate for lodging is: $89 per room (single, double, triple).             To sign up, send a personal check or money order payable to the Virginia Genealogical Society, to our address given above. At this time we cannot take registrations over the Internet. Fees depend on whether or not you wish to attend the full 2-day conference, have us provide you lunch, or a combination thereof. Conference rates are as follows:
