Grants and Awards Programs

        GRANTS

In June 1999, the Virginia Genealogical Society's Board of Governors formally established a matching grants program. This grant program is designed to support the small to moderate sized organization or library that maintains an archival program of material that assists researchers of Virginia genealogical and historical information. The organization need not have certified archivists on staff. However, it should be preserving material according to archival standards established by the Society of American Archivists and the Mid-Atlantic Archives Conference. See additional information on and applications for Special Grants and Matching Grants.

        AWARDS

In September 1995, the Virginia Genealogical Society's Board of Governors formally established a three-category awards program to recognize individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the genealogical community.

        • The Fellow of the Virginia Genealogical Society (FVGS) Award, recognizes individuals for their long-term contributions to the field of genealogy and the promotion of its growth and development at the state and national level.
        • The Virginia Records Award (VRA), recognizes outstanding contributions in making more records available to researchers through publication. Individuals who have excelled in the areas of publishing, writing, or editing Virginia genealogical source materials, have produced quality reference books, or have worked in a difficult research area, such as burned record counties, fall into this category.
        • The Commonwealth Award (CA), recognizes other societies or organizations within the state for performing outstanding service in the promotion of genealogical study. Achievements in this area would include maintaining a genealogical research library, preserving local records, improving genealogical education through special projects, compiling widely-accessible electronic databases, and producing high-quality publications.
        • The Volunteer Award (VA), recognizes an individual for exceptional or long-term volunteer service that supports or advances local or statewide Virginia genealogical research.

See list of Special Awards and Grants Previously Presented by the Society.

Nominations of qualified individuals and organizations for any of the three awards described above must be postmarked no later than February 1. Application forms that may be used for this purpose are available from the VGS office, or may be printed from this Web page.

The Board of Governors will review applications at the September board meeting, and successful nominees will be presented with an appropriate award during the fall conference. These are not necessarily annual awards, but will be presented when merited by a nominee.
